Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and do not win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on the game.

The definite advancement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL holdem.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker arena today. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
