Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he liked participating in various card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.
The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would frequently compete against one another. He was able to access several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking techniques. He used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
